Tutorial challenge: shooting bondage photos with a smart phone (part two)TutorialVideo (16:03 minute video) starring Ariel AnderssenAdded 04-06-2019Tags: barefoot, satin, blonde, nightwear, frogtie, rope bondage Having figured out that my iPhone camera couldn't really deal with the dynamic range of a fully-sunlit model, especially in rapidly-changing lighting conditions, we decided a better bet would be to move Ariel out of the direct light. Shooting on a camera app (ProCamera in this case) rather than the built-in Apple app opened up a few useful possibilities too. Firstly, it allowed me to shoot in RAW, which for the iPhone is saved as a DNG file. This preserves the full dynamic range of the camera, such as it is, and allows us to use the full post-production chain we use for normal Restrained Elegance stills. I used Lightroom to process the DNGs, pulling up the shadows and toning down the highlights to compress the contrast in the image without it looking too flat. I'll cover post production again in more tutorials, since I've been forced to change my software and workflow. But any decent RAW processing software should have highlight and shadow recovery, exposure, saturation, vibrancy, white balance and curves adjustments which are the main tools to use to tame contrasty images. Secondly, it has better controls. Apple's camera app is designed to let you take nice snapshots really quickly. You can over-ride the camera's chosen exposure with exposure compensation image-by-image, but it forgets the setting once you've taken a shot. I find it much better to be able to select a level of exposure compensation and have it stay on that setting until I change it, which most decent "pro" camera apps will let you do. Once we'd figured out where Ariel should be, what angles were most likely to work for shooting, and how to set my camera app, we tied Ariel up and tried to shoot a set like we would for a regular RE photo-story.
